janine de la vega is on the scene with an update and the cleanup. how is it going now, janine? >> reporter: well, all northbound lanes of highway 101 are now open. we're just south of fair oaks. these lanes just opened up in the last 25 minutes. you can see that traffic is flowing pretty good. i'm told the backup lasts almost until the san jose airport. now, this happened just before 3:00 a.m. the driver of this big rig drifted off the shoulder and crashed into about 40 feet of guardrail and a light pole. in the process, the right side of his fuel tank was punctured and spilled 20 to 30 gallons of fuel on the highway and the shoulder. the chp had set up some roadblocks to closes off the lanes leading up to the fair oaks exit. the driver had minor cuts to his face. but he said he's glad no other vehicles were involved. >> i make a move to the right. so quick, like that. i lost my control over there, the shoulder there on the side. that's what happened. i look. very bad. >> reporter: the driver told me that in his 30 years of driving a big rig, he's never had an accident happen.

ktvu's janine de la vega just arrived on the scene. janine? >> reporter: we're here at 85. right behind me, you can see a tow truck is pulling out this mobile dog spa, grooming van. it's called just for paws. it has gone and completely crashed into this smoke shop here located into this strip mall i just spoke with police a short time ago and they tell me that this accident all happened at 6:30 this morning. and apparently what happened is somebody who works for the just for paws mobile spa company left this unit basically unattended, was warming it up either in a parking lot or their driveway. when they came out, they found it was stolen. next thing you know, a couple of hours later, police say that they get a call from somebody passing by saying that this van has just crashed into the smoke shop called up in smoke and they saw four young men running away from the van. we don't know if anybody was hurt. as far as we know, the four suspects have not been caught. just a lot of damage left over here in this smoke shop. we just got here so we haven't been able to speak to the

ktvu's janine de la vega joins us live from san jose with the story. janine? >> reporter: salt we're here near 101 just past the 880 interchange. within the last hour, traffic hasp improved. we're seeing a lot more brake lights up. it looks like it may be starting again. if a driver coming from morgan hill could avoid traveling in rush hour, they could commute faster and speed up other drivers heading north. researchers from uc berkeley tracked more than 350,000 drivers using cell phone and gps devices and found if 1% of drivers would cancel their trips, traffic would drop by 14%. that means 8 minutes would be saved per hour. traffic ends up congesting quickly once the road's capacity is increased which is why researchers say one small change could make an impact. some drivers are skeptical. >> i don't think there will be a easy fix. i don't think there's a reverse commute anymore because there's people commuting from down here to where i live and then there's people commuting from where i live to down here. it's a hot mess. >> reporter: researchers say the st
